Summer 2026

Summer Formation Groups

Summer formation groups are spaces for shared learning, thoughtful conversation, spiritual practices, and shared life.

Rather than simply consuming ideas, we're shaped together through attention to God, one another, and the way of Christ. Groups may center around theology or meaningful texts, while others emphasize spiritual disciplines, practices, or conversation. All of them share a common desire for intentional growth in community.

This Summer’s Formation Groups…

East of Eden
Reading Group

Led by Andrew & Varina Shaughnessy
(SE Portland)

Every 3 weeks, starting in early July
(meeting approx 4x this summer)

Email Andrew for location & schedule.

This reading group will be open to both OP folks and some interested non-Christian/church friends. This is intentional so we can build bridges and relationships while discussing East of Eden's many redemptive themes. Because this is a mixed Christian/non-Christian group, we won't be treating it like a Bible study or discipleship group. It’s a book club about a grace-filled book that we trust will be redemptive, respectful, enriching, and fun.

Worship Group

Led by John & Emma Laurie
(Central Portland)

Every 2 weeks, starting in late June

Email John for location & schedule.

A group dedicated to worshipping God together in "Psalms, hymns and spiritual songs."

Theology 101: The Nicene Creed

Led by Jane Olson & Matt Day
(NE Portland)

Select Wednesdays, starting mid-June
(meeting 4-5x this summer)

Email Jane for location and schedule.

Explore basic Christian theology, the beliefs held in common by Christians from all denominations, through the text of the Nicene Creed. This is a perfect class for people who are new to the faith, or for people looking for the language to explain what they believe to family members, or for people wanting to root what they believe to the historic beliefs of the Christian church.
